Thermocouple Scanner & OSIsoft PI upgrade for Langage

We are delighted to have recently won a contract with Centrica Energy for the delivery of a new thermocouple monitoring system at Langage power station, along with the reconfiguration of the existing PI architecture.
Recently built on the outskirts of Plymouth in Devon, the 885MW gas-fired power station is capable of generating enough electricity to sustain more than half a million homes. The plant is controlled by a DCS system which collects and passes key operational data to a site-wide historian based on OSI PI. From here the data is stored long term and used to analyse plant performance and efficiency.
Centrica Energy had identified an issue with the original PI system architecture, which used a single interface server, therefore causing a bottleneck in data transmission bandwidth and representing a single point of failure in the event of a fault occurring.
Selected for our OSIsoft PI consultancy and system integration expertise, Capula was engaged to reconfigure the PI architecture, introducing redundancy and providing greater resilience to failures. In addition, Capula was contracted via the main contractor EMI to provide a system to improve monitoring of the metal temperatures inside the heat recovery boilers during operation at Langage. The solution, which uses Siemens S7 technology and involves the installation of thermocouples inside the boilers, will enable Centrica Energy engineers to analyse and optimise plant performance.
