Capula awarded second FGD contract
20 Jun 2007
Capula Ltd has been awarded the contract for the Control System on International Power's £145m Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) project at Rugeley Power Station. The main EPC contractor on the project is Lentjes GmbH.
The investment in FGD at Rugeley is on both units at the 1,000MW coal-fired station and will ensure that the station is in line with tightening European Union emission requirements, as stated in the Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD).
The Control System is for a limestone gypsum FGD process; limestone is used to remove the Sulphur Dioxide from the flue gases. This type of FGD process requires sophisticated and precise control including a diverse range of process plant equipment. The FGD process selected by International Power for Rugeley not only reduces emissions but the by-product; gypsum slurry, which after it is dried, is used extensively within the building industry.
Commenting on the good news Capula's Power Generation Business Development Manager, Phil Willett said, “We have won two FGD projects so far in 2007, demonstrating the growing reputation of Capula in this important field. The increase in electricity and gas prices and supply problems we experienced last winter has changed the UK's energy profile. Our reliance on large coal-fired power stations to generate electricity will continue for longer than previously predicted and to operate beyond 2020 these stations must comply with the EU's LCPD emission requirements and hence the investments we are seeing in FGD technology.”
International Power added, “The FGD project represents a significant investment that will both enhance the operational performance at Rugeley and significantly extend the life of the plant. The successful system integration of the FGD control system will demand a high level of technical competence and experience. Given their successful track record of delivering FGD control systems of this kind, we are confident that Capula's input will be a positive factor on this challenging project.”
Lentjes UK is delighted to have Capula as part of its supply chain on the Rugeley FGD Project. Their knowledge and experience in the Power Generation Market Sector will be an important aspect in ensuring successful timely completion of the project.
