Capula clean up at Longannet Power Station

Capula Ltd has been awarded the contract for the Control System on ScottishPower's £170m Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) project at Longannet Power Station.

The investment in FGD at Longannet will reduce emissions of sulphur dioxide (SO2) by more than 90%. Three of the four coal-fired generating units will be fitted with the Seawater Scrubbing Flue Gas Desulphurisation System. The Seawater System was chosen because of the plant's location, close to the coast. The process works by using the seawater's inherent alkaline properties to absorb and neutralise the acidic SO2.

The project will be implemented over the next three years and will bring Longannet Power Station in line with the tightening European Union emission requirements, as stated in the Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD).

Commenting on the success, Business Development Manager for Power Generation, Phil Willett said, "I am delighted to be involved in this significant project at Longannet, we are already working for ScottishPower at Longannet Power Station, supplying a HP Feed Heater Protection Control System. The installation of the FGD System is vital to the long-term operation of the power station, extending the life of the station beyond 2020 and enables ScottishPower to meet Scotland's energy needs, with consideration for the environment. In addition ScottishPower has awarded Capula the contract for the control systems, which are part of the installation of Boosted over Fire Air (BOFA) on all 4 boilers at Longannet. The BOFA system is a NOx (nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide mix) reduction system, which is being fitted in line with the LCPD'.
