Capula supports UK Power Networks’ LCNF Project
10 Oct 2011
Capula will implement an improved OSIsoft PI solution for UK Power Networks (formerly EDF Energy Networks) as part of the company’s Distribution Network Visibility Project covering Central, South and East London Network areas.
The project is one of a select few projects to have been awarded funding through the Low Carbon Network Fund (LCNF). The £500m fund, set up by Ofgem, supports ventures sponsored by the distribution network operators (DNOs) to develop and test new technology, operating and commercial arrangements.
The LCNF aims to enable DNOs to develop innovative solutions that meet the challenge of smart grids and smart metering in support of a low carbon economy.
The purpose of UK Power Networks’ £3m Distribution Network Visibility Project is to develop a smart central repository for data from existing operational and business systems which can then be combined, transformed and visualised to provide greater understanding and insight into interactions across the network.
This insight will lead to improved visibility of network performance and deliver benefits in operational performance and management. The project will establish optimum levels of distribution network monitoring and frequency of sampling for specific scenarios and applications. The project team is also trialling various optical sensors which could potentially be used to provide data capture and detailed monitoring of sites without Remote Terminal Units (RTUs).
The project will operate in a phased manner over a three-year period. Capula will develop the infrastructure to provide the central data repository based on OSIsoft PI and create a series of models, analytical approaches and visualisation solutions that allow raw data to be turned into meaningful operational information.
Capula is working alongside PPA Energy, which is providing expertise into the quantification and prioritisation of the expected benefits, and PowerSense, responsible for the alternative sensor solutions.
Capula Business Development Director, Simon Coombs, said: “This is a landmark project for the UK as we move ever closer to a smart grid enabled future. For Capula to have a fundamental involvement is testament to our capabilities in this field. We are pleased to be working with UK Power Networks to deliver a high quality solution looking forward.”
