Data historian for Thames Water
25 Aug 2011
Following a competitive process, Capula has been awarded a contract to provide and implement a data historian replacement for Thames Water’s business critical Operational Management System (OMS) based on OSIsoft PI System infrastructure.
The current OMS, based on Oracle technologies, is used to hold flow, pressure, reservoir capacity and turbidity information sourced from critical pressure points, reservoir levels, flow and turbidity meters through protocols like DECNET, X25 and TCP/IP across Thames Water’s network. Thames Water staff use the OMS to monitor the network’s performance and as the basis for incident analysis and future investment planning. It is therefore fundamental to the efficient operation of the network and to minimise business risk.
In 2010, Thames Water concluded that the existing system had reached its operating limits, was difficult to maintain and no longer supportable. An OJEU procurement process was undertaken in order to source a world class commercially-off-the-shelf (COTS) product, fully scalable for the storage and analysis of time series data moving forwards.
The Capula solution will centre on the implementation of an OSIsoft PI-based data historian, providing Thames Water with a number of key benefits by bringing all operational information into a single system, which is then made available and visible to all users from the plant floor to senior management in a clear and understandable format. Using PI's reporting and analytical tools, the information becomes meaningful and enables key decisions to be made in real-time, based on current and historical performance.
“Capula is the leading UK implementation and integration partner of OSIsoft with over 130 PI clients in the UK Energy & Utilities markets,” said Capula’s Chief Executive Roger Turner, “In addition, our position as a lead system integrator for Thames Water on its AMP5 programme of work has made us an ideal candidate for this project.”
