Capula support contract renewed by Rio Tinto Alcan

Capula is pleased that Rio Tinto Alcan has recently extended our long-term support arrangements until at least 2011. We carried out the complete modernisation of the sub-station control system at Rio Tinto Alcan in 2002. This system controlled the power distribution from the Lynemouth power station, through the electrical sub-station, transformers and rectifier plant and switch sub-station. The system has control facilities both in the smelting plant and in the power station to enable the safe operation of the plant. The new system controls power to the smelting plant more accurately and efficiently than the previous system, which enables Rio Tinto Alcan to produce a better quality product.

The system involves complex control algorithms and involves fast scanning and calculations of data whilst controlling the rectiformer's output currents to control the potline current. Accurate control of the potline current is critical to the smelter performance.

The reliable operation of this plant is critical to the production output of the smelter and is fundamental to the efficient operation of the plant. Therefore, it is imperative that the power is maintained to the plant at all times. Rio Tinto Alcan have a contract in place with Capula to ensure that the system is well supported, and through this arrangement we provide technical support to the system on a 24 hr/365 day basis with guaranteed response to site for any fault/breakdown.

Since the successful completion of this project, Capula has provided continued support of the system, and recently Rio Tinto Alcan extended this agreement until 2011.
